"Dark They Were" is the opening track off the album This Vast Array.

The song is about someone who is exhausted with the endless conflicts created by humans on earth and so decides to travel the galaxy in search of a more peaceful existence - only to find conflict among the gods in the universe as well... so he heads further out, past the outer darkness.
